Understanding the Bible: Select From Among You
Topic: Select From Among You
Dan uses Acts 6:1-7 as the focal point of today's message. How are God's leaders, specifically elders and deacons to be selected? The appointment of new church leaders frequently causes great controversy, and sometimes even church splits. In this lesson Dan outlines three Biblical steps that the first century took to select new leaders, and he holds these steps out as a model for the manner in which the Pitman Road Church of Christ will select additional elders in coming months.

Rethink 12: Wolves in Sheep's Clothing View
How do we live out the Sermon on the Mount? This last section of the Sermon on the Mount may be the most haunting and disconcerting. Hypocrisy is a big deal. Obedience is a huge deal. Fruit matters. There will be surprises at judgement. How do we live so that we are not surprised. How can I live so that Jesus will not say, "I never knew you. Away from me you evil doer!" -
Rethink 9: Watch Me View
Overview: How do we live out the Sermon on the Mount? The unfortunate truth is that in our day the biblical view of being secret in our good deeds. When you became a disciple of His, you signed up to do good deeds in secret. We signed up to give secretly, to fast secretly, and to pray in our closets. God calls us to be a people of deep integrity. -
Rethink 3: You Are Salt and Light View
Overview: How do we live out the beatitudes. We become salt and light. In your experience, are Christians so separate from the world that they can't make any difference in the world? Or have Christians become so much like the word that they're not different enough to make an impact on the world? If we are to be salt and Light to a corrupt, prejudiced, rotting world, we must live in the world, but not be contaminated by the world. We must be salt and light. To influence the world I am to be distinctive from, not identical with the world. -
Just Jesus View
Text: John 15: 1-8, Philippians 3: 7-11 Big Idea: Without Jesus we will not be able to do anything of real meaning and substance. We are entering one of my favorite times of the year, Christmas time. The mad dash begins to find those perfect gifts for the ones we love. All Access : Clarity of Life View
Big Idea: There is no doubt that there is confusion in the world and that even our own lives feel like they are in a state of confusion. Darkness has a way of making things this way. We can’t see God in all the confusion and we sometimes even have a hard time finding ourselves. God has sent Jesus to bring clarity. But we so often prefer darkness and confusion. May we open our minds and soften our hearts to Jesus.Bottom Line: Jesus gives all access to clear living in a world of confusion. -

Relate: Take A Look Around View
Big Idea: How do we relate to people in a world that's becoming less easier to relate? Especially to people who see themselves and the world differently than we do. One of the most ostracized groups of people in our country are those who are part of the LGBTQ community. How would Jesus relate to anyone in the LGBTQ community today? How should we? Relate: Get to Work View
Big Idea: The marriage relationship is the toughest out there. It can be the most wonderful thing to ever happen to us to the most frustrating in just minutes. Marriage is not easy, that’s why marriage is something you work at. In marriage you don’t fall in love, you grow in love. That’s hard work. In order for marriage relationships to get simpler, we got to love harder.Bottom Line: Making a marriage work takes work. -
Relate: Just Go Home View
Big Idea: Parent & child relationships can be complicated and messy. The only way to simplify them, to relate, is for God to be at the center. We run the risk of ruining, breaking, not being relatable in the relationships that are the most important. Parents, how relatable are you with your children? Children how relatable are you with your parents?Bottom Line: Complicated relationships are simplified when God is present. -

More to Life: Than Being Good or Doing Good Religion View
Big Idea: There is an eternal longing for an everlasting relationship and a place with God. There's nothing wrong with that. The problem is that we think we have to do all we can to earn and maintain it. We don't. There aren't enough good religious things we could do. There aren't enough kind, moral, nice things we can do either. Jesus has done it. We are in good standing because of Jesus.Bottom Line: Jesus makes me good with God. -
More to Life: Than your Relationship Status View
Big Idea: We were made to be in relationships. But we were not made to be solely dependent on those relationships. We are not defined by our relationship status. Whether or not we are single, dating or married. Earthly relationships still leave us empty. Why? Because we were made for more.Bottom Line: Everything means nothing if Jesus is not my one thing -

More To Life: Than Pleasures View
Basic Idea: It's really easy to think that life is all about the pleasures we can receive in this life. That couldn't be further from the truth. Pleasures actually have a way of tricking us, fooling us. Our lives are more than some temporary pleasures. There is more to life, and it begins with Jesus.Bottom Line: Easter means no more death. -
Unstoppable: Mission First View
Overview: We live in a performance driven, do this, accomplish that, kind of world. A world that makes it very difficult for you and I to receive or archive anything. But God says, I've made it easy for you to receive what I want to give you. The church should be the easiest place on the planet for people to be reconnected with God. That's the mission, and nothing should get in the way of that.Bottom Line: Let's make it easy. -
Unstoppable Part 4 View
Overview: Apollo 13 had a problem. The church of the first century had a problem, too. They were marginalized, persecuted and attacked. Both the church and Apollo 13 survived. What does genuine repentance look like today? What are "idols" that we are tempted to worship today? What happens when "repentance" leads us to a transformed life? How does the idea of my being the 67th book of the Bible strike you?
